Chairman's Message

Wine TastingHello and welcome to the 2010 tennis season at Ormskirk Tennis Club.

Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dave Iliff for his services to the club as Chairman. Dave was Chair for 4 years from 2006 to 2009 and during this time he dedicated a lot of time and effort to ensure that the club consolidated its strong position. It is because of this that we have a firm platform from which to be able to take the next step, so many thanks Dave.

In terms of the 2010 season, well...this season promises to be special, we have already launched our new club logo and have implemented a new court timetable for the coming summer season but we aren't going to stop there, our aim this year is to raise £10,000 for the refurbishment of the Clubhouse and with your help I believe we can make it happen!

A Race Night, a Barn Dance, two Family Fun Nights, a 'Funny Money' Poker Night, a Wine Tasting Evening and, of course, our Annual Presentation Evening are the social events on offer this year with an Ann Summers Sundown Party planned for more risqué members (I'm mentioning no names)!!

All of the aforementioned events have the same aim this year - to try and raise the required funds for our Clubhouse refurbishment, so please show your support!

As ever the senior and junior playing calendars are full, starting with Match Practices, which commence in late March, for those of you who haven't played through the winter this is your signal to dust off the racquet and limber up!

Thanks, as ever, to the Management Committee and support team who ensure that OTC have such a full and vibrant calendar of events, it takes a lot of hard work to make sure our club has something to offer for everyone and those involved give their time freely for the benefit of the club, so I really do urge you to show your appreciation by making an effort to get involved with as many activities as possible this year.

Please make sure you familiarise yourself with the new Club Bye-Laws, Court Timetable and Court Booking System prior to the start of the season to avoid any potential misunderstandings!

Enclosed in this years club information pack is the Club Newsletter, Junior Newsletter, Coaching Newsletter, Club Bye-Laws, Court Timetable and Membership Application Renewal Form(s), please take time to read through all the documents so you are fully aware of everything taking place this year.

Finally, whatever your age and membership type, I am confident that you will have a fantastic season at OTC this year, with a full playing; coaching and social calendar there is something for everyone, so good luck and I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable season.

Warmest Regards,

Rob Owens
Chairman

League Tennis Match Practice

League matches will begin this year w/c April 26th. For those who would like to be considered for team selection there will be practice sessions on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings starting at 6.00 pm on the following 4 weeks: w/c 29/3, 5/4, 12/4, 19/4.

Monday — for those aiming at 1st & 2nd teams

Tuesday — for those aiming at 3rd & 4th teams

Wednesday — for those aiming at 5th, 6th & 7th teams

If there is a good reason why you cannot attend any or all of the practices, but still wish to be considered for teams, please let the Club Captain, Janet Crompton, know. Janet can be contacted on 01704 896931.

As usual, non-attendance at practices in conjunction with a failure to phone will be taken as a clear indication that you do not wish to be considered for selection. The selection committee will not be making any assumptions based on last season.

Team captains

Team captains for 2010 are:
1st team — Fiona Wisse 01704 564444
2nd team — Barry Sherriff 01695 578133
3rd team — VACANT
4th team — Andrew Mort 01695 421297
5th team — Lynne Crossan 01695 572909
6th team — Phil McConnell 01695 573598
7th team — Ian Milburn 01695 550187

There is currently a vacancy for 3rd team captain. Please ring Janet if you feel you could undertake this role. There have been occasions in the past when a team captaincy has been shared so it may be that two people would like to jointly run the 3rd team.

Winter League

Congratulations to all those who have played Winter league this winter, especially during some of the worst weather for 30 years. Thanks again to Joyce Pierce for running it so efficiently.

We are certainly getting good use out of the significant investment we made in the lights and the carpet courts. Special thanks must go to the captains whose enthusiasm and dedication are vital to the smooth running of this enjoyable competition. Also we are always delighted to welcome colleagues from other clubs who join just to play in this event.

Another especially pleasing feature has been the number of 'new' members who have joined the Winter league - we hope they now feel confident to enjoy their first full season. Several of the new members are parents of the juniors and this can only be good for retaining our reputation as a FAMILY CLUB.

100 Club

Special thanks are due to Joyce Pierce and Sue Crowley who have really done a great job in keeping this moving forward.

The 100 Club has been going since the 1970's and has provided much pleasure and fun to us all at 'draw time' as well as valuable funds for the Club.

If you are not already in the 100 Club and would like to see the continued development and improvement of facilities at the Club, please join. You can obtain an application form by calling Joyce Pierce on 0151 526 6691.

Remember this club is open to anyone who wishes to support the club not just playing members, parents/partners - the more the merrier.

Social Events

Details of social events and fund raisers will be emailed to you and will also be posted in the Clubhouse. Included as usual are our infamous Pop and General Knowledge Quizzes, a child friendly Race Night as well as our Annual Dinner Dance.

To kick things off we are having a Wine Tasting evening on 17th April in the club house. We want a strong turnout so please make every effort to attend. Contact Sarah Lawton for further information.

Also make a date for 22nd May at 7.30pm when we're having a Ready Steady Cook style Pampered Chef Fundraiser. Watch a delicious, time saving recipe being prepared! Sample the food and fabulous product range! Friends and family are welcome - tickets will be available to purchase shortly from Anne Crowe with a free glass of wine on arrival.

May Bank Holiday - Open Day

Do you want to introduce a friend/friends to tennis?

Bring them down to the open day on 3rd May (May Bank Holiday Monday). Anytime from 11.00am to 3.00pm.

Social Tennis Club Nights

We will try to open the shale courts over the weekend of 27th/28th March. Club nights will then start on Thursday 1st April and will continue on Thursday nights throughout the season. The Club Committee has once again agreed this year to allow for the possibility, as a last resort, for league match replays and cup games that can't be played over weekends to be played on three courts on Thursday nights. It is hoped that this will not cause too much disruption to Club Nights if any. Rob Owens will be posting a regular updated calendar of court usage in the Club House to cover cup matches.

Jack Wilford to be held Saturday afternoon 24th April.

Please can you let Janet know before the 11th April if you would like to be considered for the team.

Club EGM

We are looking to change the date of the Club AGM to later in the year to allow more time for the preparation of accounts.

To effect this change we need to hold a Club EGM and vote on the issue.

The EGM will take place on Thursday 29th April at 7.45pm prior to the Wimbledon draw.

Wimbledon TicketsWimbledon

If you want to be included in the ballot for this years Wimbledon Tickets, please sign up on the sheet which will be placed in the Club House at the beginning of April, or failing that let Phil McConnell (01695 573598) know well in advance.

The draw will take place on Thursday 29th April at 8.00pm.

Please note that on the night of the draw you or your representative will have to be present on the night to select which day you wish to attend and to pay for your tickets.

Due to our response to the British Tennis Membership campaign we have been allocated slightly more tickets this year - 19 pairs in total - so you stand a good chance if you have never been to Wimbledon before.

League Players of the Year 2009

Congratulations to Brian Humphries and Sarah Lawton, the winners of the John and Kathleen Spurr Player of the Year awards for 2009.

Brian and Sarah last season made the most appearances and won the most sets of all those of us who played in the Southport League competitions - a terrific effort - well done.

7th Team - Friendly Team

Following a very successful and improved 4th season last year, the seventh team will again have a full list of both home and away fixtures.

Unlike the league teams, the friendly team enjoys an excellent tea after each match and both the tennis and the teas were very successful last year.

Places in the seventh team will be reserved for those who have not been selected to play in a league team that week.

Home matches will be played on Sunday afternoons from 4.00 pm and away matches could be played on any night as decided by the team we are playing.

Special thanks to Carol Price who captained the team so well in 2009. Carol will be replaced by Ian Milburn and we all wish Ian every success.

Club Tournaments

This year the Club Tournaments will again be run by a Tournament Committee. Last year's tournaments ran relatively smoothly and it is hoped that by again getting participants to sign up early and then through strict enforcement of 'play by dates' we will be able to stage the finals day on Saturday 10th July.

Watch out for the entry sheets which will be posted in the Club House by the end of April. Members will be invited to attend the 'draw' if they wish to - again watch out for details.

Warning - there will be less time to 'sign up' to allow more time to play - despite this warning last year some players did not sign up in time. Please let everyone know to avoid disappointment.

Junior Tennis 2010
