Winter Newsletter 2003

Welcome to the first ever winter newsletter which indicates the fact that we are trying to become a twelve months of the year club rather than just a fair weather one. We are hoping to build on the success of an excellent summer playing season which brought promotion for 3 teams – namely II, III and V and cup season for the II team. The other 3 teams did extremely well with no team being relegated. There was also some major achievement from the junior teams with the U12 mixed winning the Spartans and the U14 mixed and U16 boys also triumphing in their leagues.

At the AGM there was once again a full and open discussion about all aspects of the club and with all officers and committee members being re-selected we are now in a period of consolidation. Clearly we need to be mindful of our increased overheads but all things being equal we can look forward to next summer with immense optimism. With this in mind we are planning to utilise the facilities and improve them over the winter months. All we ask is that you play your part in either using the playing facilities or better still helping to improve the general infrastructure of the club. Look out also for some new social events at which your support would be much appreciated. Let’s try and make the normally dormant winter period a lively and enjoyable part of club life.

Best regards
Barry

Winter Maintenance Programme

There is a need this winter to carry out an overhaul of the water irrigation system for the shale courts. The system was first installed in 1991 (yes that long ago) and has served us very well. We have, however, not been as focussed as we might have been on preventive maintenance and we now have a few leaks that need attention, not least from the steel water holding tank which is rapidly rusting away and the pump house shed floor which is rotting away. We have the offer of a ‘free’ replacement water tank made out of plastic and we plan to either buy a new shed or repair the floor of the old one if this is possible. We are considering improving the appearance of the Club driveway and levelling off the car part area to improve drainage as well as doing something to make more of the ‘triangle’ of land, perhaps as a ‘viewing area’, behind the second shale court. Any other good ideas members might have to improve the club would be welcomed.

We have three working parties planned for Saturday mornings before Christmas to get on with the above. They are 18th October, 22nd November and 13th December. All are welcome so please come down and lend a hand on at least one date if you can. Bring a spade/shovel if you have one. Any questions please call Phil McConnell (01695 573598) or Martin Trengove (01704 821023).

Floodlights

The floodlights are up and running and are there to be used! Tokens can be purchased from Committee Members (£2.00 per token). Instructions on the use of the lights are posed adjacent to the pre-payment metre in the Club House kitchen. A monthly booking chart is also in position in the Club House so courts can be booked in advance in order to avoid congestion at peak times.

Winter Club Nights

We hope to keep Thursday nights going as a club night and to encourage this, the lights will be switched on (weather permitting) every Thursday from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm. Members participating in Club Nights will be asked to pay 50p each towards the cost of the lights. Those wishing to play on after 8.30 pm will be able to do so by purchasing their own tokens. Please note the lights have a curfew time of before 3 pm in the afternoon and after 11 pm at night. The first winter floodlit club night will be on Thursday 16 October.

Winter League

Joyce Pierce has volunteered to run the winter league. Those who have not signed up and want to play should contact Joyce on 0151 526 6691 before the 20 October to be included in the starting line up. Those who have already signed up and who are not able to play for any reason should let Joyce know again by the 20 October please. The final format has yet to be agreed and will depend upon the numbers participating, but Joyce wants to try to get eight teams playing each other in league format with matches being played on a Monday and Wednesday evening. Joyce hopes to start the league on Monday 27 August.

Annual Dinner

For those who have not yet booked in for the annual Dinner at Mossock Hall on Friday 14 November and wish to do so, please send your cheque and menu selection to the Club Treasurer (Martin Trengove) as soon as possible. We already have nearly 60 people attending what promised to be a great occasion. The meal will include the presentation of awards and some of our own Fame Academy/Pop Idol candidates.

We would dearly love to see as many ‘new’ members as possible as this is a great chance to socialise and get to know people better.

100 Club

The ‘100 Club’ provides a very valuable income each year for the club as well as over £600 in cash prizes to ‘100 Club’ Members. Only about half the senior membership of the tennis club are in fact ‘100 Club’ members and we will be trying to encourage those who are not members to join. It only costs £12.00 per year, or £1.00 per month payable by standing order, to join and by joining before the Annual Dinner you will ensure your number goes in the hat for the £100.00 Christmas first prize along with five other draws worth in total a further £105.00. Please contact Sue Kennedy on 01695574577 for details of how to join.

Centenary Year Celebrations

For those who don’t know the club will be celebrating its Centenary in 2005. We agreed at the AGM that a small sub-committee would be set up to consider how best to celebrate this achievement. If you would like to join this committee and provide some ideas please contact Kath Spurr.

Christmas Music Quiz – Saturday 13 December at 7.30 pm

Back by popular demand – Disco Dave adds a Christmas theme to this hugely enjoyable musical evening. Dave will also be playing some of our all time favourite Christmas records and it is hoped people will really enter into the Christmas spirit by supporting this new event. The cost will be £3.00 per head and please bring your own nibbles (NB – No turkey sandwiches allowed).

Junior Presentation Evenings

This took place last Friday (10 October) and was an overwhelming success with around 50 youngsters and parents attending. Sincere thanks go to all those who have made this such a successful season for all the Juniors – especially John, Steven, Judith – the 2 Marks. Special thanks to Karen Smith for organising the event and putting an exceptional amount of effort into preparing an excellent buffet. Sorry to go over the top but I forgot to thank Karen for her efforts on the night.

Finally, all that remains for me to do is thank everyone for what they have achieved so far and try and encourage you all to participate in the life of the Club over the winter.

Best regards
The Committee
