After another record breaking season with the club having just under 200 junior members we are pleased to announce that Rob Owens (Junior Tennis Coordinator), James McLoughlin (Assistant Junior Tennis Coordinator) and the rest of the Junior Committee (Karen Sumner, Daryl Birchall, Dave Hobson, Ruth Wright, Tina Cain, and Cath MacGabhann) have agreed to continue organising and running the Junior Tennis Programme for another year.
After consulting with club membership the Junior Committee have decided that in addition to maintaining a high quality tennis programme for all juniors their main aims for the coming season are:
The committee is confident that the summer programme they have put together reflects these objectives and their commitment to junior tennis.
2008 was a very successful season for juniors at Ormskirk Tennis Club; with just under 200 junior members by the end of the 2008 season (an increase of over 25 members compared with last year) the club boasted the largest junior membership in the Southport & District League.
5 teams were entered into the Southport & District Junior league, all of whom performed extremely well with the 14 & Under Boys A Team winning their league and the 14 & Under Boys B Team, 14 & Under Mixed and 16 & Under Boys teams all finishing as runners-up in their leagues. The 12 & Under Boys team also did extremely well finishing joint 4th in an extremely competitive league.
In the Southport and District Tournaments we were represented in 5 finals with Oliver Hobson finishing runner-up in the 8 & Under Singles, Emma Sumner finishing runner up in the 14 & Under Singles, Emma Sumner and Josh Birchall won the 12 & Under Mixed Doubles, Matthew Birchall and Conor MacGabhann won the 14 & Under Boys Doubles and Chris Foy & Peter Roberts were runners-up in the 16 & Under Boys Doubles.
In addition to the Southport and District League Ormskirk Tennis Club held its own Junior Club Tournament and several Fun Tournaments for which a role of honour listing all winners can be seen in the clubhouse. All tournaments were extremely well supported with all involved displaying fantastic tennis further reinstating their improved ability.
2008 saw the club hold its third Junior Awards Evening and Junior Christmas Party and its first Family Fun Night & BBQ, all of which were thoroughly enjoyable events and have now become permanent fixtures on the Junior Tennis Calendar!
In summary I would like to congratulate our juniors on their achievements in 2008, myself, James, and the club are extremely proud of them all. I would also like to thank all those involved with junior tennis in 2008, particularly those on the Junior Committee, for their efforts, without them such a full and enjoyable junior tennis programme would not have been possible.
Any used tennis balls would be extremely useful for the juniors and if anyone can spare any please leave them behind the bar, thank you.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate that the junior committee and I intend to take junior development to even further in 2009 by providing the maximum number of opportunities for the maximum number of juniors; we will endeavour to make the season as varied and exciting as possible allowing juniors to develop as tennis players whilst enjoying the game and meeting new friends, the committee and I will give 100% commitment to our junior tennis programme and were possible I hope you can do the same.
Please see the enclosed 'Junior Tennis' leaflet for more details about junior tennis for the 2009 season including match practices, coaching opportunities, tournaments and much more!
Warmest Regards,
Rob Owens
Junior Tennis Coordinator
