After the success of the family fun night last year the club has decided to hold others during the 2011 season!

Winners at the St Helens Tournament

The half term week proved a successful one for Ormskirk Tennis Club Junior players at the St Helens Tennis Tournament. One of the Club's talented prospects, Niamh MacGabban won the 12 and under singles whilst Emma Sumner won the 16 and under singles in an all Ormskirk final which saw her beat fellow OTC player Holly Lamden in a thrilling final to the event.

Sam Sutton 12 and unders) and Andrew Dixon (16 and unders) also produced some fantastic tennis on their way to reaching the quarter-finals in their age groups, with another OTC junior Tom Sutton (16 and unders) also having competed successfully.

LTA Ratings

You may or may not be aware that the Lawn Tennis Association offers Junior players the chance to be rated; ratings are determined by how many games you play and the result of those games, points can be gained from challenging someone who also has a rating or by entering an LTA recognised competition.

The Southport and District Junior League is an LTA recognised league and therefore those of you who are of a match standard, and who want to represent Ormskirk Tennis Club in the Southport and District League, must obtain a rating or you will not be able to play in the league.

To be awarded a rating you need to become a member of the LTA (membership is FREE), to do this you need to register on the LTA website.

Further information about ratings is also available on the LTA website.

All junior squads run for 6 weeks costing £36 for the entire course, except the performance squad which is TBC on a weekly basis depending on the number of players.

Beginner Groups are for those who are new to tennis or who have some knowledge of the game but are unable to rally

Friday 4-5 pm & Sunday 10-11 am

Intermediate Sessions are designed for those youngsters able to rally and serve but needing more technical and tactical advise as they are starting to compete at club level.

Tuesday 6-7 pm & Friday 5-6 pm

Advanced Squads are for those players that have a good understanding of the techniques, can exercise tactics and are progressing into tournament play

Tuesday 5-6 pm Friday 6-7 pm & Sunday 11-12 pm

Performance Squad aims to help those players of potential national standard develop their game so they can compete at the highest level. It will include lots of drills that simulate the patterns of play witnessed in the junior ITF circuit. Players will receive tactical input of the highest level whilst improving mental and physical areas of their game.

Friday 7-8 pm

Junior Mini-tennis courses

Mini-tennis is for children from the age of about 4 years to 11 years. It takes them through the learning stages of the game, whilst still providing the opportunity to play matches and competitions as they progress towards the full game.

It is a graduated learning process that is split into three colour codes:

RED is played on a small court (preferably indoors) about 12m x 6m with a foam ball and small strung rackets.
ORANGE is played on a tennis court with a baseline 9m from the net. A low compression ball is used.
GREEN is played on a full tennis court with a slightly slower ball.

The whole scheme is designed to make learning the game easier and fun.
