Ormskirk Tennis Club draws its members from Ormskirk, Town Green, Aughton, Bickerstaffe, Burscough, Tarleton, Hallsall, Southport, Mawdesley, Croston, Maghull, Lydiate, Rainford, Skelmersdale, Sefton, Crosby, Formby, Parbold, Newburgh, Rufford, Aughton, Tarlscough, Town Green and other surrounding areas of West Lancashire.
Ormskirk I went to Formby I and were asked to play the level events first. 1st Gents D Sherriff/R Staziker were pipped 5/6 but this spurred them on to regroup 6/1. 2nd Gents P Thomson/J Allerston led all the way 6/1,6/4. 1st Ladies V Cocks/F Wisse recovered from 2/6 to edge the second set 6/4. 2nd Ladies lost but it was all square when the mixed events began. Disappointingly only P Thomson/F Wisse got a point with a drawn 6/1,2/6 so at the end Ormskirk 1 had 5 points and Formby 1 had 11.
Ormskirk II were at home to Aughton I and played levels first. M Webster/B Humphreys were in a class apart 6/1,6/1. Young Jack Hobson with B Sherriff did almost as well 6/2,6/1. 1st Ladies S Iliff/S Crowley struggled 6/5 but then roared away 6/0. 2nd Ladies lost two tight sets. 1st Mixed M Webster/S Iliff were pushed all the way, coming through 6/5,6/4. 2nd pair B Humphreys/S Crowley were on fire as they inflicted the dreaded double bagel on their hapless opponents. 3rd pair lost. 4th pair J Hobson/S Lawton were scarcely troubled 6/3,6/2. The final result was a win for Ormskirk II by 12 points to 4 for Aughton I.
Ormskirk III entertained a strong Mawdesley II and only 4th Mixed P Roberts/P Treanor had success 6/4,3/6. 1st Gents P Morana/J McNeil edged ahead 6/4 but were unlucky in the tiebreak Stars of the nights were 2nd Gents, talented youngsters J Olverson / P Roberts who played a splendid match winning easily 6/1, 6/1. No further games were won by Ormskirk III with 4 points to 12 for Mawdesley II who will be promoted for the second year in succession, this time to Div. 2.
Ormskirk IV went to Formby HT IV but found it hard going. 2nd Mixed R Ward/L Ashcroft gained in confidence from taking a tiebreak to press on 6/2. 3rd couple C Wilson/K Ratoff were crushed 0/6 but came back strongly 6/1. 1st Gents A Mort/C Wilson opened with a powerful 6/1 but fell away 3/6.1st Ladies C Winrow/L Ashcroft combined well with a confident 6/3,6/1, but with no further success the final result was Ormskirk IV, 6 points, Formby HT IV, 10 points.
Ormskirk V travelled to Blundellsands II. 1st mixed pair D Sherwood/K Sumner set the tone with a gritty fight taking two tiebreak sets. 3rd pair S McGabhann/L Crossan began strongly 6/2 but were then pegged back 4/6. T Sumner/E Roberts left their opponents shell-shocked 6/1,6/0. Sean and Tom were again in the points as they bagged 2nd Gents with a strong 6/1,6/2. 1st Ladies K Sumner/J Campbell began slowly 2/6 but took the second set by the same score. L Crossan/E Roberts rounded things off with a confident 6/3,6/1, giving Ormskirk V the overall win by 10 points to 6 for Blundellsands II.
Ormskirk VI asked Formby V to play mixed events first. S Charters/Katie Sumner began well 6/3 but couldn't hold on 3/6. G Birchall/B Lett had no such problems 6/3,6/2. P McConnell/C Price edged a tiebreak 5/6 but couldn't press on 3/6. 1st Gents S Charters/G Birchall were supreme 6/0,6/3. 2nd Gents lost. 1st Ladies K Sumner/B Lett blitzed their opponents 6/0,6/0. C Price/P Hesketh dug deep 6/2,6/5, giving Ormskirk VI the victory over Formby V by 12 points to 4.
Sunday morning social tennis starts at about 10am or earlier if you can forego a lie in. If you can't make it then come down on Thursday evenings at about 7pm for a game.
