Formby Holy Trinity kindly hosted the final of the Trinity Shield this week between Ormskirk 2 and Hightown 1.
First on court were the Ladies Singles, Ladies Doubles and Mixed Doubles. The Ladies Pair of Hilary Bell and Sue Crowley set quickly about their task and gave Ormskirk a flying start coming off court in quick time with a 6/2,6/0 scoreline.
Shirley Iliff contested the Singles event and took an easy 6/2 lead. Then her opponent got into her stride and forced a tie break. In the second set Shirley dug deep and emerged the winner 7/6.
Barry Sherriff partnered Sarah Lawton in the Mixed Doubles. Barry covered the court well and his shot selection was immaculate, setting up opportunities for Sarah to dominate the net and put the ball away. Barry and Sarah won 6/3,6/4.
Rod Birchall showed why he was asked to contest the Gents Singles. His solid consistent game frustrated his young opponent's every effort and his sheer reliability resulted in a 6/0,6/1 scoreline.
Hightown's only success came in the hard-fought Gents Doubles when the outcome of the final had already been determined. Nevertheless it was a gripping encounter for Dave Sherwood and Mark Cahill who were unlucky to go down 4/6,7/5,4/6 with only a couple of points deciding the result.
At the end of the evening Ormskirk 2 had won by 4 events to 1 and the Trinity Shield was again in Ormskirk's possession.
