Ormskirk Tennis Club draws its members from Ormskirk, Town Green, Aughton, Bickerstaffe, Burscough, Tarleton, Hallsall, Southport, Mawdesley, Croston, Maghull, Lydiate, Rainford, Skelmersdale, Sefton, Crosby, Formby, Parbold, Newburgh, Rufford, Aughton, Tarlscough, Town Green and other surrounding areas of West Lancashire.
2005 Southport and District Tennis League Final Tables
In the final week of the season Ormskirk 1 were at home to Formby 1 and it proved to be very closely fought. 1st Gents D Sherriff/P Thomson took the first set 6/3 but their opponents wouldn't lie down 6/6. 2nd Gents J McNeil/R Birchall set off strongly 6/1 but took their feet off the pedal 3/6. 1st Ladies N George/J Watling were in dominant form 6/1,6/2. 2nd Ladies lost. Ormskirk were just in front 4.5 -.3.5 as the mixed events went on court. D Sherriff/N George eased to a 6/1 set but couldn't hold on 4/6. 2nd Mixed were just edged out 5/7,5/7, and 3rd Mixed also lost. R Birchall/F Sunners played a tenacious 6/4,6/3 but when the sets were added up Ormskirk 1 had been pipped 7.5 - 8.5 by Formby 1.
Ormskirk 2 were drawn away to Division leaders Southbank 1 who had not lost a match all season. This seemed to be the spur they needed. 1st Mixed M Abijade/V Cocks had the power play 6/4,6/3. M Cahill/S Iliff would not give way under pressure 7/5,6/4. D & J Birchall were nip and tuck 6/6 but then stepped on the gas 6/0. B Sherriff/S Crowley made short work of it 6/3,6/1. This was a splendid first half for Ormskirk 2, giving their opponents a mere half point. 1st Gents M Abijade/M Cahill did not get into the first set 1/6 but hung on for a 6/6. 2nd Gents D Birchall/B Sherriff were too strong 6/2,6/2. V Cocks/J Birchall had to struggle to get a half point out of 1st Ladies while S Iliff/S Crowley shared the honours 6/2,1/6. A win for Ormskirk 2 with 11.5 points to 4.5 meant a first defeat for Southbank 1, but both teams are assured of promotion to Division 2 next season.
Ormskirk 3 travelled to Formby 3 and the level events went first on court. 1st Gents K Slater/G Joyce worked really hard and were rewarded 7/5,6/3. D Moss/P Morana edged 2nd Gents 6/4,6/6. 1st Ladies S Davison/S Lawton started well 6/2 but then halved 6/6. H Bell/J Pierce did the same with an easy 6/1 but didn't capitalise 2/6. 1st Mixed K Slater/S Davison made a formidable pairing 6/2,6/3. G Joyce/J Pierce overwhelmed their opponents with a combination of power play and dominant net shots 6/0,6/1. D Moss partnered S Lawton who was suffering an injury which finished the match early 4/6 and conceded 0/6. P Morana/H Bell led easily in both sets but nearly managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory 6/6,6/4 against a promising young couple. In the end it was a convincing win for Ormskirk 3 by 11.5 to 4.5 and keeps them in Division 3 next season.
Ormskirk 4 played Hightown 1 and put the Mixed Events on court first. 1st pair went down narrowly. 2nd pair M Trengove/E Gunstone began well 6/3 but were downed by the same score in the second set. There were no such problems for C Wilson/L Ashcroft as they won easily 6/2,6/1. D Chorley/V Jones rounded off the first half with an untroubled 6/2,6/3. 1st Gents S Roche/M Trengove lost the first set 3/6 but came back with determination 6/4. 2nd Gents C Wilson/D Chorley also shared the points 3/6,7/5. 1st Ladies J Crompton/E Gunstone played convincing tennis 6/2,6/3 and having lost the first set 2/6 L Ashcroft/V Jones bounced back with a commanding 6/1. The final result was Ormskirk 4, 10 points, Hightown 1, 6 points and they are assured of remaining in Division 4.
Ormskirk 5 were away to Formby Holy Trinity 3, the Division leaders who have lost just one match this season so they knew points would be hard to come by. 1st and 2nd Mixed pairs lost. 3rd Mixed P Murphy/R Jones grabbed a half point as did 4th pair C Wells/E Lawton. 2nd Gents P Murphy/C Wells made a good start 6/2, but couldn't keep it up 3/6. 1st Ladies B Lett/C Winrow did well to grab a half point. At 2nd Ladies R Jones partnered youngster Emily Lawton making her first appearance in the senior ranks and together fought hard for a 3/6,6/3 scoreline. Emily made a sterling contribution of 1.5 points towards the 3.5 gained by Ormskirk 5 with 12.5 for the stronger FHT 3. Ormskirk 5 are safe in Division 5.
Ormskirk 6 had a lot at stake as they played their final match of the season against Carlton 3. 1st Mixed P McConnell/J Campbell set the ball rolling 6/3,6/4. 2nd pair lost as did the 4th pair but the third pair of D Iliff/J Gregson kept them in the hunt with a terrific 6/2,6/2. 1st Gents P McConnell/D Iliff had a topsy-turvey match going down 1/6 but turning the tables by the same score. 2nd Gents G Birchall/R Owens dug in with some determined play 6/3,6/3. 1st Ladies J Campbell/S Hughes convinced with a strong 6/2,6/1 and J Gregson/C Price took 2nd Ladies with a confident 6/2,6/3. When the scores were added up, Ormskirk 6 having 11 points to Carlton 3's 5, the celebrations began as it meant that Ormskirk 6 had worked their way through Division 8 in one season, finishing as champions. As reported last week, Ormskirk 6 also won the College Cup.
2005 has been a thoroughly successful year for Ormskirk Tennis Club.
Out of 8 teams in each division:
O1 finished 5th in Division1.
O2 finished 2nd in Division 3 and are promoted to Division 2, with one rearranged match still to play.
O2 also won the Trinity Shield.
O3 finished 4th in Division 3.
O4 finished 5th in Division 4.
O5 finished 6th in Division 5.
O6 finished 1st in Division 8, are promoted to Division 7, and won the College Cup.
Ormskirk 1 went to North Meols 1 who are lying in second place in the premier division. They managed to keep pace in the mixed events. D Sherriff/N George had a convincing 6/3,6/3. 2nd Pair lost. 3rd pair R Staziker/J Temple were unlucky to be pipped 5/7 but recovered strongly 6/2. R Birchall/A Rhodes also fought back from 1/6 to take the second 6/4. So at the half-way stage it was all square. Then injury struck 1st Gents. 2nd Gents managed a half point but North Meols' Ladies proved too strong and the match finished 4.5 to Ormskirk 1, 11.5 to North Meols 1.
Ormskirk 2 entertained Hillside 1. 1st Mixed pair J McNeil/V Cocks started nervously 2/6 but then overpowered their opponents 6/1. B Sherriff/F Sunners were never troubled 6/1,6/3. D & J Birchall are a reliable pairing who combined well 6/3,6/2. G Joyce/S Iliff controlled play from the outset 6/2,6/1. 1st gents J McNeil/D Birchall used all their experience 6/4,6/3. B Sherriff/G Joyce were made to work a bit harder 6/3,7/5. 1st Ladies V Cocks/F Sunners were pushed all the way 6/4,6/6 and J Birchall/S Iliff having lost a narrow 4/6 came back strongly 6/2. The final result was Ormskirk 2, 13.5, with 2.5 for Hillside 1, an emphatic score which keeps them in the promotion hunt.
Ormskirk 2 were also in action in the final of the Trinity Shield against Ainsdale 1. Ormskirk came home with the Trophy, winning three of the five events.
Ormskirk 3 went to Birkdale 3 with a strong team. Rising star M Abijade partnered S Crowley at 1st Mixed and won 6/3,6/4. K Slater/S Davison kept their nerve 6/3,7/5. P Morana/H Bell played with confidence 6/2,6/3, and D Moss/S Lawton finished the first half of the evening with a fine 6/0,6/3. 1st Gents M Abijade/K Slater edged the first set 6/4 then pulled away 6/0. P Morana/D Moss just had the edge 6/4,6/4. 1st Ladies S Crowley/H Bell were outplayed 1/6 but worked their way back to win a tight 6/4. S Davison/S Lawton had it easier 6/1,6/4. The result was a resounding victory for Ormskirk 3 by 15 points to 1 for Birkdale 3.
H Bell & S Crowley were again in action as they defended their title as League Ladies Veterans Champions in the Finals held at Mawdesley on Saturday. After a hard-fought battle against U Barton & S Leech of Ainsdale, the final score was 6/4,6/7,6/2 for the experienced Ormskirk pair.
Ormskirk 4 were at home to division leaders Sphynx 4 so it was always going to be a struggle. Things looked good at the half-way stage after the Mixed events. M Trengove/J Pierce set the tone 6/3,6/2 though second pair lost. D Chorley/E Gunstone recovered from a lost 2.6 to nip ahead 7/5. G Birchall/L Ashcroft were in full cry 6/1 but could not hold on 4/6. 1st gents lost. 2nd Gents G Helm/G Birchall began well 6/4 but were pegged back 2/6. 1st Ladies lost. Despite a spirited 6/6,7/5 from E Gunstone/L Ashcroft it was not enough and Ormskirk 4 went down 6.5 to 9.5 for Sphynx 2.
Ormskirk 5 were hoping for a repeat of their success against Moor Park 2 earlier in the season but it proved a more formidable task. 1st Mixed pair I Duffy/K Sumner set off strongly 6/2 but the tables were turned 3/6. More points came at 4th Mixed with a strong effort by P Murphy/C Winrow 6/4,6/3. 1st Gents loss was offset by a gutsy 2nd pairing C Wells/P Murphy 6/3,6/1. 2nd Ladies V Jones/C Winrow did well to grab a half point, but in the end Ormskirk 5 were the losers by 5.5 to 10.5 for Moor Park 2.
Ormskirk 6 were in confident mood as they welcomed Formby Holy Trinity 5 knowing that they were already certain of promotion to Div 7, having worked their way through Division 8 in just one season. Mixed events were played first. P McConnell/J Campbell doggedly kept their noses in front 6/3,7/5. M Winrow/S Hughes shared the honours 3/6,6/1. D Iliff/J Gregson were off-court in double quick time 6/0,6/2. R Owens/S Duffy went ahead 6/4 but couldn't close it out 2/6. 1st Gents P McConnell/M Winrow lost a close 5/7 but kept their determination 6/3. D Iliff/R Owens dictated play 6/2,6/3. 1st Ladies J Campbell/S Hughes got more confident as the match progressed 6/4,6/0. 2nd Ladies narrowly lost. Ormskirk 6 were delighted with their 11 points to 5 win over FHT5.
Ormskirk 6 were also celebrating their victory in the College Cup.
After last week's match where the weather robbed Ormskirk 1 of a more emphatic victory,having led 7-1 at half time, the sun shone on a thoroughly decisive white wash as they entertained Birkdale 2. The Gents and Ladies events went on first. 1st Gents D Sherriff/R Staziker edged the first set 6/4 then pulled away strongly 6/0. P Thomson/R Birchall were soon off-court, conceding just one game. 1st Ladies J Watling/A Rhodes dictated play 6/3,6/3, as J Temple/F Sunners had to do a little more 6/4,6/3. The Mixed events were next with D Sheriff/J Watling leading the charge 6/1,6/3. R Staziker/J Temple were awesome, not allowing their opponents into it at all 6/0,6/0. P Thomson/A Rhodes were barely troubled 6/1,6/1 and R Birchall/F Sunners also lost only two games 6/0,6/2. This was a tremendous victory for Ormskirk 1, taking all 16 sets.
Ormskirk 2 went to Ainsdale who lie in second place in their division. The mixed pairs struggled, 2nd pair D & J Birchall nipped a half point. B Sherriff/S Iliff did well 6/4,6/2. Trailing as the levels went on court, 2nd Gents B Sherriff/G Joyce edged a tight 6/4,6/3. 1st ladies J Birchall/V Cocks were the stronger 6/3,/6/2, as S Iliff/S Crowley dug deep, being last on court, to secure a draw with 6/1,6/6 making it 8/8 with Ainsdale 1.
Ormskirk 3 have not had an easy time this season, being unable to field a settled team as they entertained Formby Holy Trinity 2. Mixed pairs were first. 2nd Couple K Slater/S Davison set off strongly 6/2, but fell away 6/1. P Morana/H Bell did not find their form until the second set which they took with a gutsey 6/4 having lost the first 2/6. D Moss/J Pierce made a determined 7/5,6/2. So it was all square at the half-way stage. The Gents pairings were crucial. D Sherwood/K Slater pulled out all the stops 6/2,6/2 and P Morana/D Moss kept it going 6/3,6/4. 1st Ladies S Lawton/S Davison were ecstatic to pull off a 6/3 first set though losing the second. A loss at 2nd Ladies did not matter as Ormskirk 2 had clinched a narrow 9 points to 7 win over FHT 2.
Ormskirk 4 went to Argyle 3. Both Gents pairs lost. 1st Ladies J Crompton/V Jones were in great form 6/0,6/4 Even more dominant were E Gunstone/A Vernon 6/2,6/0. 1st and 4th Mixed lost. C Wilson/E Gunstone halved 2/6,6/0 as did D Chorley/V Jones 0/6,7/5, but Ormskirk 4 had lost by 6 points to Argyle 3's 10.
Ormskirk 5 had a splendid well-contested match with Hillside 2. The Mixed events went on first with captain I Duffy leading by example. He and K Sumner played one of the best matches of the season 6/0,6/2, earning the respect of the opposition. M Winrow/B Lett grabbed a valuable half point. Youngster C Wells combined well with the experienced C Winrow 6/4,6/2 and C Abernethy/R Jones also managed a half point. I Duffy gained his full quota of points with M Winrow to take 1st Gents 6/3,6/3. 1st Ladies K Sumner/B Lett shared the honours 3/6,6/4 as did C Winrow/R Jones 6/2,4/6, and it was enough to secure a most rewarding win 9 points to 7 over Hillside 2.
Ormskirk 6 went to Croston and were asked to play Mixed events first. J Mullany/J Campbell started slowly 6//6 but found their form 6/1. G Birchall/J Gregson also gained in confidence 5/7,6/1. 4th Mixed R Owens/S Duffy were the stronger 6/3,6/3. A loss at 1st Gents was offset by G Birchall/R Owens with a dominant 6/2,6/0. 1st Ladies J Campbell/J Gregson had to fight to keep their noses in front 6/4,6/6, as C Millington/S Duffy were more in control 6/3,6/4. Ormskirk 6 came home with 10 points to Croston 2's 6, keeping alive their hopes of promotion with two matches to go.
On yet another wet miserable Monday Ormskirk welcomed neighbours Aughton and put the mixed events on court. D Sherriff/J Watling pushed in front 6/4 but let their opponents back in 3/6. R Staziker/J Temple showed little mercy 6/1,6/1. P Thomson/A Rhodes combined well 6/2,6/4 and R Birchall/F Sunners dictated play 6/2,6/2. Rain intervened and all the other matches were shared, giving a win for Ormskirk by 11 points to 5 for Aughton.

K Slater/D Moss had a close match 6/4,4/6. 1st Ladies were pipped 4/6,4/6 and 2nd Ladies also lost. Final score was 5.5 for Ormskirk 3 and 11.5 for Ainsdale.

Stars of the evening were E Gunstone/A Vernon who inflicted the double bagel on their hapless opponents. The first three Mixed events were very even. M Trengove/J Pierce roared away 6/1 but were held 4/6. C Wilson/E Gunstone edged it 7/5 but fell away 2/6. D Chorley/V Jones recovered from 1/6 to take the second with a determined 6/2. J Mullaney/A Vernon clinched it for Ormskirk with a strong 6/1,6/3, giving Ormskirk 4 9.5 points to Mawdesley 2's 6.5.
Ormskirk 5 had a tussle with Birkdale 4, the final score belying the closeness of many of the matches. 1st Mixed D Smith /K Sumner dug deep to take both points 6/4,7/5. G George/B Lett got stronger 6/4,6/1. G Helm/R Jones edged the first set 7/5 then pulled away 6/3. The close games went in Ormskirk 5's favour who won by 13 points to 3 for Birkdale 4.
Ormskirk 6 travelled to Hillside 4. When a home gent was unavailable a willing youngster stepped in. 1st Mixed P McConnell/J Campbell kept their noses in front 6/2,7/5. G Birchall/S Hughes did enough for a 6/1,6/4 result. R Owens/J Gregson made a formidable 3rd pair 6/2,6/0 and C Abernethy/C Millington overpowered their opponents 6/1,6/0. 1st gents P McConnell/G Birchall made no mistakes 6/0 but their opponents were not finished and came back 6/4. R Owens/C Abernethy were quickly off court 6/0,6/0. 1st Ladies J Campbell/S Hughes shared the sets 6/2,4/6. J Gregson/C Millington were not troubled 6/2,6/2. Ormskirk 6 were simply too strong, winning by 14 points to 2 for Hillside 4.
The outcome of the match between Ormskirk 1 and Formby Holy Trinity 1 was in the balance until the last ball. With the mixed events on court first, D Sherriff/J Watling dominated 6/2,6/4. 2nd pair lost. 3rd Mixed P Thomson/A Rhodes drew the first set 6/6 but couldn't press on 3/6. 4th Mixed R Birchall/F Sunners edged it 6/6,6/3. It was all-square at the half way stage. 1st Gents D Sherriff/R Staziker were awesome 6/1,6/2. P Thomson/R Birchall were also too strong 6/1,6/4, but as both Ladies pairs lost the match was a fitting 8-all draw.
Last time Ormskirk 2 and 3 played each other there was a near upset but this time round it was much more clear-cut. B Sherriff/V Cocks set off strongly 6/0 against K Slater/H Bell but it was closer in the second 6/4. 2nd pair D & J Birchall edged the first set 7/5 but G Joyce/S Davison replied with a splendid 6/1. M Cahill/S Iliff had a terrific tussle with D Moss/S Lawton and shared the points 4/6,6/4. D Sherwood/S Crowley beat D Chorley/J Crompton 6/3,6/3. 1st Gents B Sherriff/D Birchall started slowly against K Slater/G Joyce 2/6 but recovered 6/3. M Cahill/D Sherwood beat D Moss/D Chorley 6/2,6/4. 1st Ladies V Cocks/J Birchall didn't let H Bell/S Lawton into the game at all as 2nd Ladies S Iliff/S Crowley beat S Davison/J Crompton 6/2,6/4. Ormskirk 2 were much the stronger on the night, beating Ormskirk 3 by 13 points to 3.
Ormskirk 4 were at home to North Meols 3. 1st pair M Trengove/J Pierce did well 6/6 then drew away 6/2. 2nd pair lost. 3rd pairing of talented young player M Ajibade with A Vernon were inspired 6/0,6/2. G Helm/K Ratoff drew the first set 6/6 to even the points at the half-way stage. 1st Gents M Trengove/M Ajibade were always in control 6/3,6/1. 2nd Gents C Wilson/G Helm fought all the way for 6/4,6/6 but with losses for both ladies pairs Ormskirk 4 were pipped at the post with 7.5 points to North Meols 3's 8.5.
Mixed events went on court at Formby 4 against Ormskirk 5. Captain I Duffy with K Sumner set off well 6/3 but were held 6/6. Despite some close games there was no further joy in the mixed events for Ormskirk. 1st Gents I Duffy/C Wells had an odd match losing 2/6 but coming back 6/0. 2nd Gents lost. 1st Ladies K Sumner/R Jones completely dominated 6/1 but fell away 3/6. Stars of the evening were V Jones/C Winrow who won in good style 6/3,6/4. Ormskirk 5 were the losers to Formby 4 by 5.5 to 10.5.
Ormskirk 6 hosted Blundellsands 3 and began proceedings with the mixed pairs. P McConnell/J Campbell began in great form 6/2 but lost the next set by the same score. G Birchall/S Hughes led 6/3 but shared the second set 6/6. 3rd Mixed was a real marathon for R Owens/C Price taking an hour and forty minutes for a drawn 6/4,5/7. C Abernethy/J Gregson held out for a 6/6 second set. 1st Gents P McConnell/G Birchall also had their money's worth in a war of attrition 6/6,7/5. 2nd Gents R Owens/C Abernethy had another topsy-turvy scoreline 6/1,2/6. 1st Ladies J Campbell/S Hughes would not give an inch hanging on for 6/4,6/4. C Price/J Gregson were the last to come off court, losing another long match 5/7,4/6, but Ormskirk had already done enough to ensure a narrow win over Blundellsands 3 by 8.5 points to 7.5.
Ormskirk 1 improved on the score from their first encounter with Birkdale 1 earlier in the season. The Gents and Ladies events went on court first. 1st Gents D Sherriff/R Staziker were in superb form losing a close first set 4/6 but then stepping on the gas 6/1. 2nd Ladies J Temple/A Rhodes were next in the points with a dominant performance 6/2,6/3. 1st Mixed D Sherriff/N George set off well 6/3 but conceded the second by the same score. A half point was gained at 4th Mixed by R Birchall/A Rhodes but at the end the superior power of Birkdale 1 told with a win over Ormskirk 1 by 11.5 to 4.5.
Ormskirk 2 were away to Birkdale 3 and the mixed events began the proceedings. B Sherriff/F Sunners dug deep with a deserved 7/5,6/3. M Cahill/V Cocks recovered from 2/6 to come back 6/4. D & J Birchall took the first set 6/3, but lost their way 1/6. D Sherwood/S Iliff crushed their opponents 6/1,6/2. 1st Gents B Sherriff/D Birchall squeezed a half point as M Cahill/D Sherwood were honours even 6/3,4/6. 1st Ladies F Sunners/V Cocks started tentatively 3/6 but found top form 6/0. J Birchall/S Iliff were too accurate 6/1,6/2. Ormskirk 2 were winners by 10.5 to 5.5 for Birkdale 2.
Ormskirk 3 struggled for points against the Division leaders, Southbank who are yet to lose a match. In the mixed events only 1st pair P Morana/H Bell got on the scorecard having recovered from a bagel first set with determination 7/5. 1st Gents P Morana/G Joyce won the first set 6/2, and were unlucky not to gain the second as well in a close 5/7. M Trengove/D Chorley were pipped 4/6 but upped their game with a decisive 6/0. With both ladies events going to the visitors, Ormskirk 3 had lost 3-13 to Southbank 1.
Ormskirk 4 went to Aughton 2 and enjoyed a really close match. 1st Mixed C Wilson/J Crompton started slowly 2/6 but did well to recover 7/5. D Moss/L Ashcroft began strongly 6/2 but went down by the same scoreline. G George/J Pierce were made to work for a narrow win 6/6,7/5. I Duffy/E Gunstone ensured honours were even at the half way stage by grabbing a half point. Ormskirk 5 entertained Carlton 2. There was a splendid win for Ormskirk's talented youngster Michael Ajibade who with A Vernon took First Mixed 7/5,6/2. 3rd Mixed J Abernethy, another good junior, partnered experienced V Jones and halved the match 1/6,6/3. Yet another fine prospect C Abernethy enjoyed a close match with C Winrow to share the honours 7/5,4/6. 1st Gents M Ajibade/ P Murphy were in great form 6/3,6/3, as were 2nd Ladies V Jones/C Winrow, who dug in 6/3,6/4. At the end of the evening it was a fair result, 8 points each.
Ormskirk 6 went to Southbank 2 and there were wins for 1st Mixed D Iliff/R Jones with a steady 6/4,6/3 and 2nd pair G Birchall/J Campbell who were barely troubled 6/3,6/0. 4th Mixed C Wells/J Gregson took a valuable point 4/6,6/3. 1st Gents D Iliff/G Birchall played really well together to triumph 6/3,6/2. R Owens/C Wells were made to fight all the way 4/6,6/4. Another close match came at 1st Ladies for R Jones/J Campbell who held their nerve with a tight 7/5,7/5. S Duffy/J Gregson also had to tough it out to share 4/6,6/4. The end result was a victory for Ormskirk 6 by 11 points to 5 for Southbank 2.
The Gents and Ladies events were first on court when Ormskirk 1 went to Argyle 1. They found themselves with an uphill task as only 1st Gents D Sherriff/R Staziker picked up a 6/3 set. 1st Mixed D Sherriff was again in points as he partnered N George for another 6/3 set. Best result came at 2nd Mixed for P Thompson/J Watling who won 6/4,6/3. R Staziker/J Temple shared an even 3/6,6/4 but it was a disappointing loss for Ormskirk with 5 points to 11 for Argyle 1.
Ormskirk 2 were rained off as were Ormskirk 3, but the latter were able to replay at Hillside. 1st Mixed M Cahill/S Lawton set off well 6/4 but couldn't hold on 3/6. K Slater/H Bell combined well with a confident 6/3,6/4 as did G Joyce/S Davison who also won by the same scoreline. P Morana/J Crompton lost a close 5/7 but were not to be denied 6/2. A loss at 1st Gents was offset by 2nd Gents K Slater/P Morana who edged a tight 6/4,6/4. 1st Ladies S Lawton/H Bell began poorly 1/6 but changed their tactics to gain a set 6/2. S Davison/J Crompton kept their noses in front 6/3,6/4. Ormskirk 3 won by 11 points to 5 for Hillside 1.
Ormskirk 4 entertained Croston with the Mixed events on court first. A loss at 1st pairing was compensated by 6/4,6/2 for D Moss/L Ashcroft. M Trengove/E Gunstone shared 3rd Mixed 4/6,6/2 and G Helm/A Vernon were too strong 6/3,6/1. Ormskirk 4 suffered a reversal of fortune in the levels as 1st Gents and 1st Ladies lost. 2nd Gents M Trengove/G Helm recovered from 3/6 to forge ahead 6/1. 2nd Ladies E Gunstone/A Vernon were barely troubled 6/3,6/1. The final result was a draw with 8 points each for Ormskirk 4 and Croston 1.
Ormskirk 5 also had to replay at Hoole, and enjoyed success. 1st Mixed D Smith/K Sumner had a topsy/turvey 6/3,1/6. I Duffy/V Jones lost a close 4/6 but came back 6/3. P McConnell/R Jones played with experience 6/2,6/4 and G George/C Winrow were unstoppable 6/2,6/3. 1st Gents D Smith/I Duffy were in commanding form 6/2,6/2. P McConnell/G George had to fight harder 6/3,7/5. A loss at 1st Ladies was offset by a hard-fought 6/4,6/4 by V Jones/C Winrow. Ormskirk 5 came home with 12 points giving Hoole 1 4 points.
Ormskirk 6 were at home to North Meols 5 and found points hard to come by. 1st Mixed J Mullaney/S Hughes had to fight hard for the first set 6/4 but fell away 2/6. D Iliff/J Campbell were in control with a classy 6/2,6/2. G Birchall/C Price gained a drawn set as did D Quirk/S Duffy. 1st Gents J Mullany/D Iliff dictated play 6/2,6/3. 1st ladies S Hughes/J Campbell were matched shot for shot 6/6,6/6 but losses at 2nd Gents and 2nd Ladies cost them the match, going down by a close 7 points to Ormskirk 6 and 9 points for North Meols 5.

Ormskirk 2 were at home to Division leaders Southbank 1. There was no joy for 1st or 3rd Mixed. 2nd Mixed M Cahill/V Cocks went down 2/6 but raised their game to come back 6/4. 4th Mixed B Sherriff/S Iliff were only able to gain a half point. 1st Gents S Roche/ M Cahill were the stars of the evening taking both sets 6/2,6/3. D Birchall/B Sherriff had the closest game, just edging it 6/6,7/5. 1st Ladies lost a desperately close 5/7,4/6 whilst 2nd Ladies J Birchall/S Iliff had a similar experience but just nipped it 5/7,6/4. Most matches were very close with the advantage going to Southbank 1 with 10 points and 6 for Ormskirk 2.
Ormskirk 3 were at home to Formby 3 for a most enjoyable match played in a great spirit. 1st Mixed D Sherwood/S Lawton started well 6/3 but rather fell away 1/6. 2nd Mixed K Slater/H Bell used all their experience to dominate 6/2,6/3. 3rd Mixed lost but P Morana/J Crompton got stronger and more confident 6/6,6/1. 1st Gents D Sherwood/G Joyce kept their noses in front 6/4,6/3 whilst K Slater/P Morana set off strongly 6/2 but were then contained 6/6. 1st Ladies S Lawton/H Bell had a dour struggle but just edged it 7/5,6/6. S Davison/J Crompton were nip and tuck 6/6 but then romped home 6/0. At close of play Ormskirk 3 had beaten Formby 3 by 11 points to 5.
Ormskirk 4 travelled to Hightown 1 and the Mixed events went on court first. M Trengove/E Gunstone started very well 6/3 but couldn't keep their form going down a close 5/7. C Wilson/A Vernon shared a tight game 4/6,6/2. G George/L Ashcroft's match was also decided by a point here and there 6/4,4/6. S Kyriacou/R Jones continued the pattern 3/6,6/3. 1st Gents lost, 2nd Gents G George/S Kyriacou gained a half point and it was left to the ladies to decide the outcome. They rose to the challenge with E Gunstone/A Vernon inching ahead 7/5,6/2 and L Ashcroft/R Jones playing with determination 6/2,6/3, ensuring a win for Ormskirk 4 over Hightown 1 by the narrowest of margins, 8.5 - 7.5.
Ormskirk 5 were at home to a strong FHT3 with the only success in the Mixed events coming from captain I Duffy and K Sumner who coast home 6/0,6/2. 1st Gents G Helm/I Duffy went down 3/6 but got their act together with a powerful 6.0. 1st Ladies V Jones/C Winrow had to fight all the way 6/4,3/6, but with all the other events lost, FHT3 went home with 12 points to Ormskirk 5's 4 points.

P Murphy/J Campbell were in command 6/3,7/5. 4th pair lost. 1st Gents P McConnell/D Iliff recovered from a close 5/7 to move up several gears 6/1. Again Ormskirk's ladies proved the deciding factor with K Ratoff/S Hughes deserved winners 6/4,6/2 and J Campbell/S Duffy forcing the pace 6/1,6/4. With a win over Carlton 3 by 9.5 - 6.5 Ormskirk 6 has reached the half-way point of the season by leading the division, to which they were promoted at the end of last season.

P Thompson/J McNeil started slowly but then an injury to an Ormskirk man stopped the match. 1st Ladies N George/A Rhodes had a tight match in which they just had the edge 6/4,6/6. In the mixed events 2nd pair R Staziker/J Temple grabbed a half point. P Thompson/A Rhodes were too strong taking both sets 6/2,6/4. 4th Mixed was a walk-over to North Meols giving them a win on the evening; Ormskirk 5 - 5.5, North Meols - 10.5.
Ormskirk 2 travelled to Hillside 1. 1st Mixed S Roche/V Cocks had a ding-dong battle 5/7,7/5. D & J Birchall edged in front 7/5,6/4. 3rd Mixed lost. D Sherwood/S Crowley shared 4th Mixed 6/4,4/6. 1st Gents S Roche/D Birchall grew in confidence 6//4,6/2. V Cocks/J Birchall set off well 6/3 but couldn't hold on 4/6. S Iliff/S Crowley outclassed their opponents 6/1,6/1. Ormskirk 2 came home with 11 points to 5 for Hillside 1.
Despite having had a couple of close matches, Ormskirk 3 were awaiting their first win as they played Birkdale 3. 1st Mixed K Slater/H Bell took a half point. G Joyce/S Davison had a close 6/4,6/3.D Moss/S Lawton were too strong 6/1,6/1. P Morana/J Crompton were always in front 6/3,6/2. 1st Gents G Joyce/K Slater took the first set with a close 6/4 but them romped away 6/0. D Moss/P Morana were made to work hard but came through 6/4,6/4. 1st Ladies lost a nervy game but S Davison/J Crompton rounded things off with a comfortable 6/3,6/1. The result was a resounding first victory for Ormskirk 3 with 12.5 points to Birkdale 3's 3.5.
Ormskirk 4 were without some of their regulars so they knew it was going to be tough at Sphynx 2. This proved to be the case. There was some success for 2nd Mixed G George/L Ashcroft 4/6,6/6. 4th Mixed S Kyriacou/R Jones were is awesome form 6/0,6/1. 2nd Gents D Smith/S Kyriacou fought hard 6/2,6/4. 2nd Ladies A Vernon/R Jones recovered from a lost 3/6 to come back 6/4 but it was in vain as Ormskirk 4 managed 5.5 to 10.5 for Sphynx 2.
Ormskirk 5 were sorry that Moor Park 2 arrived with a lady missing, so were given 4 points straight away. 1st Mixed G Helm/V Jones took a half point. 2nd pair J Mullaney/C Winrow were in control 6/4,6/2. I Duffy/S Hughes were made to fight all the way in a close 7/5,5/7. 2nd Gents had the first set 6/1 when the rain came so the other matches which could be played were halved leaving the final score Ormskirk 5 - 11 points, Moor Park 2 - 5 points.
Ormskirk 6 found a very strong Formby HT 5 waiting for them. In the mixed events the only success came at 2nd Mixed for D Quirk/A Glover who took the second set 6/4. 2nd Gents P Gregson/R Owens combined well to edge it 6/6,6/3. 1st Ladies J Campbell/A Glover were the stars of the evening with a fine 6/4,6/3 win. Ormskirk 2 were at home to Ainsdale 1. The first two mixed pairs lost but D & J Birchall partly offset this with a fine 6/3,6/0. G Joyce/S Iliff took the first set 6/4 but fell away 1/6. Two points adrift, Ormskirk looked in more trouble as 1st Gents lost. 2nd Gents G Joyce/D Sherwood gave them hope. 6/3,6/1. 1st Ladies F Sunners/V Cocks were merciless 6/1,6/0 and J Birchall/S Iliff took a tight 7/5 and then closed it out 6/0. When the points were added up, Ormskirk 2 had edged it with 9 points to 7 for Ainsdale.
In appalling wind and rain Ormskirk 3 went to Formby Holy Trinity 2 with a couple of regulars unavailable. 1st and 2nd Gents lost close matches. 1st Ladies S Crowley/H Bell managed a half point. 2nd Ladies S Lawton/S Davison played well in the conditions 6/2,6/3. 1st and 2nd Mixed lost narrowly. 3rd Mixed P Morana/H Bell set off strongly 6/2 then found themselves1/5, 15/40 down before they clawed their way back 6/6. M Trengove/S Davison started slowly 1/6 but came back well 7/5. Ormskirk 3, 5 points, FHT2, 11 points.
Ormskirk 4 hosted the match against Argyle 3 and put Mixed events on court first, but the only success came at 3rd Mixed with a one-sided 6/1,6/1 for G George/L Ashcroft. There was no joy for the Gents Doubles either. 1st Ladies J Crompton/L Ashcroft came back with renewed vigour from a 3/6 first set to take the second 6/1. E Gunstone/A Vernon were the stars of the night 6/1,6/1 but Ormskirk 4 could only accrue 5 points to Argyle 3's 11.
Ormskirk 5 had a disappointing night at Hillside 2. 1st Mixed M Winrow/K Sumner began tentatively 3/6 but found their form 6/1. Ormskirk 6 met the challenge of Croston 2. 2nd Mixed D Quirk/J Gregson just had the advantage 6/6,7/5 in a hotly contested match. C Wells/C Price romped away 6/2,6/2, and C Abernethy/C Millington did well 6/4,6/3. 2nd Gents D Quirk/C Abernethy formed a good partnership with a splendid 6/3,6/4. 1st Ladies S Hughes/J Gregson shared the points 6/1,5/7. C Price/C Millington were too canny for their opposition 6/0, 6/2. The result was a good win for Ormskirk 6 by 10.5 to 5.5 for Croston 2.

Ormskirk 2 registered a resounding win over FHT2. 1st Mixed S Roche/F Sunners had a tight 7/5,4/6. J McNeil/V Cocks won 6/2,6/2. Husband and wife partnership D & J Birchall were a steady 6/1,6/2 and B Sherriff/S Iliff rounded off the first half 6/2,6/0. 1st Gents S Roche/J McNeil were made to work hard 7/5,7/5, while D Birchall/B Sherriff had an easier 6/1,6/1. 1st Ladies F Sunners/V Cocks were solid at 6/3,6/3. 2nd Ladies J Birchall/S Iliff grew ever stronger 6/3,6/1. Ormskirk 2 were victorious with 15 points to 1 for FHT 2.

K Slater was again in the points as he partnered captain G Joyce to take a strong 2nd Gents 6/3,6/3. 1st Ladies S Crowley/H Bell set off on a roar 6/0 but let their opponents back in 4/6. 2nd Ladies S Lawton/S Davison took a consolation half point but it was not enough as Ormskirk 3 lost to Ainsdale by 6.5 to 9.5.
There was another terrific result for Ormskirk 4 in their match with Mawdesley 2. 1st Mixed P Morana/J Crompton won 6/2,6/6. M Trengove/J Pierce dominated with the loss of one game 6/0,6/1. C Wilson/E Gunstone drew a close 4/6,7/5. G George/L Ashcroft also drew 3/6,6/3. 1st Gents P Morana/M Trengove doggedly hung on 6/4,6/4. C Wilson/G George had it a bit easier 6/3,6/2. 1st Ladies J Crompton/J Pierce had to fight all the way 6/4,6/6 while E Gunstone/L Ashcroft made sure 6/3,6/0, which gave Ormskirk 4 the clear victory 13 points to 3 for Mawdesley 2, and puts them at the top of Division 4.

Ormskirk 6 are really relishing their promotion to Div 8 and are cutting a swathe through the opposition, having won all their matches so far. A Vernon/S Hughes and J Campbell/S Duffy took their respective Ladies events by the same score of 6/1,6/1, to give Ormskirk 6 all 16 points, leaving them unbeaten at the top of the division.

There was no joy for Ormskirk 1 as they were outclassed by Birkdale 1. The closest score was a 5/7 set for 3rd Mixed P Thompson/A Rhodes in a 0-16 points mismatch.

Ormskirk 3 were also affected by bad weather and had to re-arrange a replay against Southbank 3. Points were hard to come by with some limited success for K Slater/E Gunstone who shared 4th Mixed 3/6,6/3. G Joyce/K Slater started well 6/0 but were pegged back 5/7. With a halved 2nd Gents in bad light, Ormskirk 3 came away with just 3 points to Southbank's 13.

Ormskirk 4 travelled to Croston for their first match in Division 4. 2nd Mixed M Trengove/E Gunstone romped away 6/3,6/1. C Wilson/L Ashcroft set off in fine style 6/1 but had to fight for the second set 7/5. G Helm/A Vernon were in majestic form to take 4th Mixed 6/1,6/1. 1st Gents P Morana/M Trengove overpowered their opposition 6/0 but were forced to halve the second set. 2nd Gents C Wilson/G Helm halved their match as did 2nd Ladies L Ashcroft/A Vernon, due to poor light. With a half point at 1st Ladies for J Crompton/E Gunstone Ormskirk 4 were the victors over Croston 1 by 10 points to 6.
Newly promoted Ormskirk 5 entertained Hoole 1 who unfortunately arrived a gent short, thus conceding points at 2nd Gents and 4th Mixed. D Smith/K Sumner took 1st Mixed 6/3,6/2. 2nd pair were edged out 5/7,5/7 but 3rd Mixed I Duffy/C Winrow won 6/2,6/3 1st Gents D Smith/P McConnell started slowly 6/6 but drew away 6/2. 1st Ladies lost. 2nd Ladies C Winrow/V Jones were untroubled 6/2,6/1. There was an overall win for Ormskirk 5 by 11.5 points to 4.5 over Hoole.
Ormskirk 6 travelled to North Meols 5 and met with instant success. 1st Mixed M Winrow/S Hughes took both points 6/3,7/5. J Mullany/J Campbell edged 2nd Mixed 6/6,6/2, as did 3rd Mixed G Birchall/S Duffy 6/6,7/5. K O'Sullivan/L Mountain were always ahead 6/4,6/3. 1st Gents M Winrow/J Mullany had youth on their side 6/3,6/6. 2nd gents G Birchall/K O'Sullivan dominated 6/2,6/0. 1st Ladies S Hughes/J Campbell proved too strong 6/3,6/1 and S Duffy/L Mountain wrapped up 2nd Ladies 6/3,6/4. It was a strong win for Ormskirk 6 13.5 points to 2.5 over North Meols 5 and a good start in their new division.
